Deutsche Bank Collection Live—meet Axel Hütte
Artist Talk
German

In 1976, Axel Hütte attended the first, now legendary, photography class of Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, along with Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, and Thomas Ruff. The Time Present exhibition shows Hütte’s photograph Vescona II, which explores the heart of Tuscany, an idealized landscape. But this is not just another clichéd image of Italy: For Hütte, photography is a medium that reflects not only the landscape but the image itself and the role of the viewer. »I empty my pictures as much as possible,« says the artist, »so that the viewers can find themselves in them. So they can search for themselves in them.« Friedhelm Hütte talks about the working method and artistic practice with the photographer.
