The Babylon Kino is a historic cinema in Berlin's Mitte district on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, opposite the Volksbühne theatre. The building was designed from 1928—1929 by architect Hans Poelzig in the New Objectivity style and is considered a listed heritage building.
The cinema originally opened in 1929 as a silent film theatre with an orchestra pit and a cinema organ, which is still used today. It has three screening venues: the main auditorium for 500 people as well as the smaller halls 2 and 3 for 70 and 45 viewers respectively. After major renovations in 1948, it served as an arthouse cinema in the GDR. In 1993, the hall had to be closed due to risk of collapse, but was restored and reconstructed in accordance with heritage conservation standards from 1999—2001. The restoration was honored with an award in 2002.
Today, the Babylon Kino shows a mix of classics, silent films, European, Asian and independent cinema as well as documentary works. It is known for its special atmosphere and is considered an important cultural institution of Berlin.
On the occasion of the film premiere on 13 September 2025 at Babylon Berlin, an artist talk with Cyrill Lachauer and Mike Brodie will take place on 14 September 2025 at the Berlinische Galerie.
