In his multivalent work, Michel Majerus (1967–2002) omnivorously fuses divergent media, techniques and motifs to reflect on pop-cultural phenomena at the turn of the 21st century, broadening the physical and conceptual boundaries of painting. This process began to crucially take shape in the early 1990s as Majerus emerged from the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart into post-reunification Berlin. During this transitional period, he painted a series of small-format works, largely on board, that display an unburdened levity presaging an approach that was to become a central facet of his practice. Dual exhibitions at neugerriemschneider in Berlin and at the Matthew Marks Gallery in New York both spotlight early work by Majerus, chronicling the formation of a singular artistic vocabulary.
