Oliver Zahn: Crowd Control

Sophiensæle
Sophienstraße 18, 10178 Berlin

To prepare for protests, unrest and riots, riot police forces around the world stage elaborate, script-based simulations. In addition to the uniformed officers in training, other police officers take on the roles of protesters—chanting political slogans and wearing symbols of political subcultures. A genuine police theater. In Crowd Control, seven performers transpose these police tactics and practices—typically classified as ›confidential‹—onto the stage: into an ambiguous simulation setup where the boundaries between the logic of theater and that of the police begin to blur.

Content Note: Crowd Control shows police practices and the simulation of violence in the context of police training.
