Tong Kunniao—Raise High the Roofbeam

›Raise High the Roofbeam‹, Tong Kunniao’s solo exhibition at Hua International, is a poetic and political meditation on visibility, misinterpretation, and cultural resistance. Installed in the attic of a century-old Berlin building, the exhibition reimagines the Chinese roof as a suspended space of tension—between East and West, tradition and disruption, critique and concealment. Drawing on symbols from Chinese and queer histories, Tong transforms the gallery into a site of encoded meaning and architectural defiance.
