Artist Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg answers our questionnaire: on tired horses, chubby seals, diving and resurfacing

What are you working on at the moment?
Right now I’m working on my second solo exhibition at Efremidis in Berlin, opening in September, along with our participation in the Paris+ par Art Basel art fair this October. Both projects focus on a new group of works featuring weary horses, sofas, and carvings.

What are you reading or listening to right now?
I’m reading ›The Fall of Sleep‹ by Jean-Luc Nancy. I like his passionate way of finding words to describe states of mind, down to the last detail.

What would you do if you didn’t make art?
Build something.

Do you have a favourite building?
I like certain parts of buildings and things—like the bar area at the front of Kino International, windows in the Czech Embassy, a wrought iron fence on Richardplatz, the way a VAUBEKA gantry crane and a snack bar fit together, the chubby seal in the Neptunbrunnen.

What animal would you like to be?
Dumbo. He can walk and fly.

Who would you like to meet?
Jean-Luc Nancy, Plato, Joan Mitchell, Nirvana, Beethoven, Judy Chicago, Isa Genzken, Agnes Martin, Peter Handke, Mike Kelley, Karen Kilimnik, Susan Sontag, John Berger, Charline von Heyl, William Carlos Williams, Neil Armstrong, Italo Calvino, Éric Rohmer, Pinocchio and Minnie Mouse, Botticelli and Rubens, among others. I would like to watch them work.

Do you have a daily ritual?
Swimming. Diving down—resurfacing.

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve had to admit to yourself?
Failure makes us who we are … we all flounder around until we hit on something.

What accessory or object could you not be without?
Key. Opens doors.

What do you do when the work is done?
My work involves continuous activity and research. I do it even when I’m on holiday or travelling.
