Haus am Waldsee is Berlin's oldest institution for contemporary art. Housed in a historic villa on the city's southwestern outskirts, it has presented changing exhibitions and programmes dedicated to contemporary art since 1946. Founded in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, the institution became an artistic home for avant-garde and progressive voices who had been persecuted or banned from exhibiting under National Socialism. This commitment continues to shape its programme today.
Over the decades, Haus am Waldsee has championed major international positions, among them Käthe Kollwitz, Max Ernst, Lee Bontecou, Rebecca Horn, Niki de Saint Phalle and Miriam Cahn. Its programme spans visual art, design, performance, film and sound. Through up to four exhibitions each year, alongside concerts, readings and performances, Haus am Waldsee engages with pressing social and political questions and provides a platform for both international and as yet undiscovered artists.
