Izabella Gustowska: Home's Shadows

Polish artist Izabella Gustowska (*1948) has been one of the defining figures of conceptually oriented Polish art since the 1970s. Situated at the intersection of bodily representation, the construction of subjectivity, and feminist image critique, her work investigates the conditions of visual perception and the cultural production of identity. As a professor at the University of the Arts in Poznań, she has influenced several generations of artists. She gained international recognition through, among other achievements, her participation in the São Paulo Biennial (1983, 1987) and the Venice Biennale (1988).

For her presentation at Kvost, Gustowska presents new works that explore the themes of memory and temporality. The point of departure is her family home in Poznań, where her family has lived since 1938 and which functions as both a biographical and a cultural site of memory. These new works enter into dialogue with key works from the 1980s, offering a retrospective perspective on recurring motifs and central questions that run throughout her oeuvre.
