Perform! Miriam Kongstad: Hard Play

Neue Nationalgalerie
Potsdamer Straße 50, 10785 Berlin

›Hard Play‹ (2025) is a choreographic analysis of children’s games. In her work, Miriam Kongstad examines how, from an early age, we are trained to accept and reproduce (gender) identities and social norms. Conceived as a duet, the piece combines the performer’s physical movements with a live soundscape by musician Heva Vaupel. At the centre of the choreography is a 1.5-metre-long braid attached to the performer’s hair, which symbolically transforms into various objects commonly associated with children’s games, including a princess’s hair, a dog leash, a lasso, a skipping rope, and a whip.
