Renate Bertlmann: Tenderness as Resistance

Renate Bertlmann, born in Vienna in 1943, is one of the influential figures of the feminist avant-garde of the 1970s. For more than five decades, her photographs, sculptures, objects, installations, performances, and drawings have explored love, sexuality, and power through a visual language that oscillates between tenderness and aggression, irony and vulnerability. Pacifiers, knives, condoms, and latex become carriers of both bodily experience and social inscription.

At the core of Bertlmann's practice lies resistance to patriarchal oppression and the assertion of self-determination. Institutions such as marriage, binary gender roles, and religious iconography are subjected to a precise inversion: vulnerability becomes a weapon, submission an act of provocation, and the sacred a site of subversive wit. Kitsch, pornography, and confrontation collide directly, at once humorous and uncompromising.
