Salim Green: Sugarshack

With their resistant assertions of unknowability and interiority, Salim Green’s works refuse the pull of straight lines, settled meanings, or clearly mapped identifications; instead, they gesture toward the slippages and dislocations that structure embodied experience. In a new installation, Green delves into the architectures and rituals that shaped the social lives and histories of Waterloo, Iowa, the city that the paternal side of the artist’s family calls home. Drawing upon speculative lines of thought and ideas like Dark Forest Theory as models for relational politics, Black experience, and the risks of visibility, Green’s translocation of the residues of geographically specific communities, architectures, and histories to Berlin proposes that orientation is not simply about where we are, but about the directions we take—how we arrive at spaces, and how spaces are shaped by the bodies that inhabit them.
