The Only Way by Tadeusz Kantor
A new exhibition and performance space is taking shape on Platz der Märzrevolution, beside the Maxim Gorki Theater—extending the theater into public space, open to photography, film, text, live broadcast, and performative intervention.
The wall is activated for the first time on 11 SEP 2026, with ›The Only Way.‹ The project sets historical materials from Tadeusz Kantor's circle alongside new performative work by the Gorki ensemble. Kantor's texts, images, and theatrical concepts become the starting point for something happening now—in the theatre and out on the square.
The opening presents a photograph by Eustachy Kossakowski, from Tadeusz Kantor's estate, documenting the ›Panoramic Sea Happening,‹ which Kantor staged on the Baltic beach of Łazy near Osieki on 23 AUG 1967. The multi-part happening included ›Sea Concert,‹ ›Raft of Medusa,‹ ›Erotic Barbuyage,‹ and ›Agrarian Culture on the Sand.‹ In ›Sea Concert,‹ the artist Edward Krasiński stood on a platform in the water and conducted the waves, while the audience watched from neat rows of chairs on the sand.
Enlarged onto the wall, the photograph carries that historical moment into the Gorki's public space. Kantor pushed theater past its institutional edges, turning beach, sea, wind, audience, and passersby into parts of one shared situation. The presentation is accompanied by Kantor's text ›The Only Way,‹ published on the Gorki Theater's website in the original Polish and in English translation.
