Capitain Petzel, a joint venture between Gisela Capitain, Cologne, and Friedrich Petzel, New York, opened in Berlin in autumn 2008. The gallery, a 1,300 square meter glass-encased modernist building preserved from the Socialist Era, is located in one of the city’s historical landmarks on Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin-Mitte.
Since 2008, more than 90 ambitious exhibitions have been realized in the gallery, amongst others by Yael Bartana, Karla Black, Monica Bonvicini, Wade Guyton, Charline von Heyl, Martin Kippenberger, Maria Lassnig, Robert Longo, Sarah Morris, Laura Owens, Joyce Pensato, Seth Price, Stephen Prina, Monika Sosnowska and Christopher Williams.
Capitain Petzel continues to present exhibitions of established international artists represented by the galleries in Cologne and New York, while simultaneously the gallery is developing an autonomous programme with artists such as Andrea Bowers, Sanya Kantarovsky, Matt Mullican, Jack O'Brien, Peter Piller, Amy Sillman, Mikołaj Sobczak and Leyla Yenirce. A range of books and catalogues are available from all of the gallery artists.
