Ein Parkplatz wird zum Picknickfeld, Autos zu Bistrotischen und Maschinen zu Lampenhaltern—kuratiert durch das Büro ›Something Fantastic‹ sind hier im BAW Garten am Gropius Bau verschiedene künstlerische Interventionen zu sehen, die Veränderungsprozesse im Stadtraum reflektieren und insbesondere das Spannungsverhältnis im Gropius Hain zwischen Parkplatz und Naturraum aufgreifen. ›Something Fantastic‹ ist der Zusammenschluss der Architekt*innen Leonard Streich, Julian Schubert und Elena Schütz. Ob bei der offenen Gestaltung des Deutschen Pavillons auf der 15 Biennale di Venezia, bei ihren nachhaltigen, kommunalen Wohnprojekten in Flandern oder bei der Buchgestaltung—›Something Fantastic‹ stellt sich Fragen von Nachhaltigkeit, sozialen Gefügen und ökologischen Aspekten und verbindet diese mit ihren gut durchdachten und einfachen Konzepten. In einer postautomobilen Zukunft spielen sie im BAW Garten die Weiternutzung von Ort und Gerät durch. Es entstehen Plattformen für die verschiedenen Programme im Rahmen der Berlin Art Week sowie Orte des Zusammenkommens und des Entdeckens. A carpark becomes a picknick area, cars become restaurant tables, and machines become lamp holders—curated by the firm ›Something Fantastic‹ , in this exhibition at BAW Garten various artistic interventions are being presented that reflect on processes of change in urban space, in particular the tension in Gropius Hain between a carpark and a natural space. ›Something Fantastic‹ is a collaborative effort of the architects Leonard Streich, Julian Schubert, and Elena Schütz. Whether it’s the open design of the German Pavilion at the 15th Venice Biennale, their sustainable, communal residential projects in Flanders, or book design, ›Something Fantastic‹ explores questions of sustainability, social structures, and ecological aspects in their work, combining them with concepts that are well conceived and yet simple. In their installation for BAW Garten, they play out the uses of spaces and devices in a post-automobile future. This results in platforms that can be used for various events as part of Berlin Art Week or as places of encounter and discovery. Der Architekt Gustav Düsing (*1984 in Münster), lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Mit seinen Arbeiten verbindet er Architektur, Naturereignisse und die Wahrnehmung von Umweltreizen und schafft architektonische Konzepte, die konventionelle Perspektiven auf Architektur und Raum hinterfragen. Seine Installation ›Picknick‹ (2024) ist eine modulare, skalierbare und flexible Struktur die ständig neu konfiguriert werden kann. Die Objekte erinnern an gewölbte Zeltdächer oder Tarps, die Schatten spenden und Schutz geben, aber auch den Raum beleben und ohne eindeutige Funktion dazu einladen, Materialität und Beschaffenheit zu erkunden. Architect Gustav Düsing (b. in Münster in 1984) lives and works in Berlin. In his works, he combines architecture, natural events, and the perception of environmental stimuli and creates architectural concepts that question conventional views of architecture and space. His installation ›Picknick‹ (2024) is a modular, scalable, and flexible structure that can be constantly reconfigured. The objects recall arched tent roofs or tarps that provide shade and protection, but also vitalise the space and inspire us to explore the equipment and material without a clear function.

Sam Chermayeff (*1981 in New York City) ist Architekt und Möbeldesigner mit Sitz in Berlin und New York City. Neben seiner eigenen Praxis Sam Chermayeff Office ist er Mitbegründer des Büros June 14 Meyer-Grohbrügge & Chermayeff. Chermayeff arbeitete fünf Jahre für Sanaa in Tokio und leitete Projekte wie den Serpentine Pavilion und die Kuration der Biennale von Venedig. In seiner Arbeit ›Cars and the public joy‹ (2023) nimmt er das Freiheitsobjekt der Moderne—das Auto—um darüber nachzudenken, welche Möglichkeiten der Nutzung es in der postautomobilen Ära bieten kann. Die Installation regt zur Interaktion und zur Reflexion über das Alleinsein und das Zusammenleben an, indem kleine Änderungen wie ein Stuhl, eine Lampe oder eine Markise die herkömmlichen Nutzungsmöglichkeiten erweitern. Sam Chermayeff (born in New York, 1981) is an architect and furniture designer based in Berlin and New York. In addition to his own firm Sam Chermayeff Office, he is the co-founder of 14 Meyer-Grohbrügge & Chermayeff. Chermayeff worked for five years at Sanaa in Tokyo, directing projects that involved the Serpentine Pavilion and curating the Venice Biennale. In his work ›Cars and the public joy‹ (2023), he takes the ultimate symbol of freedom in modernity, the car, to contemplate its potential uses in the post-automobile era. The installation sees to inspire interaction and reflection on being alone and living jointly by adding alterations like a chair, a lamp, or an awning to expand the car’s traditional use.

Ein Rollgerüst fungiert als Tisch für die Cooking Demonstrations, ein Vorhang dient als Backdrop der Talk-Bühne, die Gesprächsteilnehmer*innen sitzen auf einem Sofa aus Sandsäcken, ein Kran und ein Heliumballon werden zum Mond—die im Rahmen der Installationen von ›Something Fantastic‹ im BAW Garten gezeigten Objekte sind Überraschungsmomente. Die angemieteten Geräte werden nicht in ihrer ursprünglichen Funktion verwendet, sondern umfunktioniert zu einem Ensemble aus Angeboten für alle zur vorübergehenden Nutzung. Sie erzählen von Verbindung und Dialog und stellen Fragen von Nachhaltigkeit, räumlicher Erkundung und der Zukunft der Architektur. A rolling scaffold serves as a table for the cooking demonstrations, a curtain provides the backdrop for talk stage, participants in the conversations sit on sofa made of sandbags, a crane and a helium balloon become the moon: the objects shown in the installations by ›Something Fantastic‹ at BAW Garten are surprising. The leased equipment is not used as it is originally intended, but refunctioned to create an ensemble to provide temporary uses for all. They attest to contact and dialogue and pose questions about sustainability, exploring space, and the future of architecture.
